Obituary for Raymond "Ray" Shammel

Raymond “Ray” Shammel, 90, passed away at his home on Saturday, April 11, 2020. He was born in Sioux City, Iowa on December 31, 1929 to Earl and Edna (Bleasdell) Shammel. Ray graduated from Fergus High in 1948 and worked for a time farming and ranching.

In May of 1955, Ray enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. He proudly served his country for 20 years. He was an instrumentation repairman for fighter jets and automatic flight control/avionics system support during the Vietnam War. Ray was honorably discharged in May of 1975; retiring as Master Sergeant.

Ray returned to farming and ranching. He enjoyed genealogy and reading, having earned a certificate for completing a course in genealogy in 1955. Ray also loved his family. He held onto a note his wife Dorothy had written him in September of 92’ and didn’t miss an opportunity to spoil grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Later on, Ray could be found at the LDS Church or in his garden.

Ray is survived by his daughter, Mary (Paul) Spencer; grandchildren: David (Theresa) Spencer, Saranna (Jesse) Doheny, Lori Spencer, Ken (Caylee) Spencer, and Elisa Spencer; great- grandchildren: Tanakie Doheny, Deakon Doheny, and Kennan Doheny, Isaic Spencer, Connor Spencer, and Thomas Spencer, and Avalon Spencer; brother Earl Jr. (Jean) Shammel. He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Sawyer Shammel; daughter, Nancy Kay; and siblings, Vernon Shammel and Virginia Cabrel.

Memorial Services will be held later in the year. A limited (social-distancing) graveside service will be held Friday, April 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the Lewistown City Cemetery where Ray will be laid next to his wife Dorothy. Military Honors will be presented by Air Force Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Ray’s honor to a charity of your choice.
