Obituary for Merle Arlys Bauman

Our beautiful mother, Merle Arlys (Spears) Bauman lost her battle with cancer January 3, 2020. She was born August 10, 1932 to Burley and Leona Spears in Jordan, Montana. She spent most of her childhood in Jordan with a short time in Washington while her parents worked in the shipyard during WWII and then in Billings, Montana while her mother continued her education. She graduated from Garfield County high school in 1951.

During her senior year she met and married Donald Boyd Bauman. After marriage they lived in Jordan, MT, Eddies Corner, Great Falls, MT and finally moving to Moore, MT in 1959. They lived in a small trailer up until their youngest child was born. At which time, they bought their first home "without wheels" in 1961. She continued to live in her home until right before her death. Mom and Dad were blessed with 6 children: David (Doreen) Bauman of Hardin, MT, Donna (Jay) Schmauch of Spangle, WA, Denise (Ken) Brottem of Moore, MT, Derree (Greg) Kamp of Lewistown, MT, Debbie (Jimmy) Bauman of Moore, MT, and Dotty (Phil) Zier of Lakeside, MT; step-daughter, Dorrie (Rob) Burkhardsmeier; and step-son, Larry (Patricia) Gilstad.

Mom is survived by all of her children and 18 grandchildren: Donald Bauman, Dana (Nick) Watson, Dea (Colby) Riffel, Dava (Mike) Kunz, Natalie Guthas, Niki (Jason) Noble, JacobSchmauch, David (Tamarack) Brottem, Michael (Mandy) Brottem, Kevin (Stacy) Brottem,Melissa (Nick) Kamp, Nick (Jordan) Kamp, Daniel Kamp, Stacie (Andrew) Keating, Trevor(Kelsey) Daer, Andrew Zier, Molly (Kalani) McLaughlin, and Linnea Zier. She also has 41 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Her special friends include Margaret Wiley, Marion Hertel, Mariah Bingeman, Mavis Baucom and her many friends in her church, Eastern Star and the Moore community.

Mom's earliest job was working as a soda jerk in the pharmacy in Jordan, MT when she was a teenager. After moving to Moore she worked at Eddies Corner, the family owned business, as a waitress until the mid-70s. She was also the Town Clerk for Moore for 29 years.

Music played a large part in Mom's life. As a young girl, Mom learned to play the saxophone, accordion and piano. In high school, she performed in an all-girl band with her family at many local events. She played the piano at the Methodist Church, along side Marion Hertel on the organ, for many many years. It was always a special time of year when her family would be home for Christmas and attend the church service in Moore while Mom was playing the piano. The hymns she played had a little honky tonk feel to them much to the enjoyment of the congregation.

Food was an important part of our family gatherings. Whenever there was a meal to share there was always Mom's special rhubarb cake. She was also known to make delicious cinnamon rolls and taco soup and would have that meal ready for whomever came to visit.

Mom was happiest when she had her family visiting. She would color with anyone who would join her and she always had an orange push-pop in the freezer to give to the kids. She loved listening to her family laughing and talking around the dining room table. She developed many friendships, young and old. One of her greatest joys was saying "hello" to those who passed by her home while relaxing on her deck. She also loved Halloween, dressing up in a costume, decorating her house and greeting all of the children who came to her door.

Mom married Jim Bergstrom in 1975 and lived with him in Moore up until his death in 2010. Mom loved all the children that came into her life and enjoyed many years with her step-children and step-grandchildren.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents, Burley and Leona Spears; her only sister, Louise Allen; 1st husband, Don Bauman; 2nd husband, Jim Bergstrom; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Adam Daer; and her beloved cat, Miss Kitty.

Mom cherished the love and kindness of her friends and family. A time of viewing will be held Friday, January 17th, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Creel Funeral Home Chapel in Lewistown. Her Celebration of Life will be at the Moore School, January 18, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. A private family service and burial will take place prior to that. Memorial donations can be made to the Moore Endowment Fund, Moore Methodist Church, Moore EMTs, Moore Cemetery, Hospice or a charity of your choice.
