Obituary for John Ralph Carter

Longtime Denton resident, John Ralph Carter passed on to Heaven December 19, 2018. Dreaming of moving cattle, weaning calves and driving tractors filled the last phase of life. Naturally so, his life-calling continuing the legacy his parents, Ralph and Sarah began in 1909. This prairie and farm ground was the place of his birth in the spring of 1923.

Country living allowed riding horseback to and from school; and necessitated living in Denton with his older sister and friends for John's high school years. Montana State College provided two more years of education before he took the “reins" at the Everson ranch.

John married Betty Jo Naylor December 27, 1945 and their married years numbered 72 1/2.
Number of children added quickly with two sets of twins equaling six children five years and under.

His skill of carpentry included making wagons, a wooden house with benches to transport four children in the back of the Willy jeep, while two rode up front with him or Mom and a one wheel trailer to carry luggage for the family vacation at their cabin on Flathead Lake. He was a craftsman welder and his talent created iron railings at the cabin and his son’s home in his later years.

John's civic interests were numbered with boards of: school, church, Elevator, weed control, Eastern Star, Masons, and Shriners, enriched his life. The Denton town council and the rifle club rounded out his interests.

A dozen grandchildren gave Papa John much happiness loving to retell their expressions and stories. They kept him company hunting, fishing, sitting around the campfire and sharing the hours at holiday celebrations. Great grandchildren number eleven. "Jimminy Crickets" he might reply!

A life well-lived: Rancher, farmer, sportsman, Montanan.

John is preceded in death by his wife, Betty in May, 2018; daughter, Nola in June of 2016; sister, Jeanne Bigelow in July, 2018 at 99 2/3 years; and sister, Marie Parkinson in 2006 at 90 yrs.

John is survived by sons, Tom, Ted, and Jack; daughters, Neta, and Joan (husband, Terry); grandchildren, Bret (wife, Kim), Angie (husband, Sebastian), Bart, Brian (wife, Kristen), Greg, Ryen (husband, Greg), Erik (wife, Deena), Jess (wife, Stacey), Ty, Colt (wife, Laura), Beau, and Josey (husband, Dallas); great-grandchildren, Gage, Kaiden, Jackson, Isaac, Aiden, Land, Loryn, Lettie, Marit, Grey and Isabella completed his family.

The family appreciates the care and kindness of Hospice and the staff at Valle Vista for the last seven months.

A celebration of life service to honor our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend will be Thursday, December 27th, 1:00 p.m. at the Denton Town Hall. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Denton Ambulance, Denton Endowment or CMMC Hospice.
