Obituary for George William Dunlap

Our brother, father, uncle, great-uncle and friend, George William Dunlap, 76, of Lewistown, Montana died Wednesday, November 8th, 2017 at home in the arms of his sister, Patricia A. (Dunlap) Farley and a Hospice R.N.

George was born in Lewistown, MT to May E. (McDonald) and Howard W. Dunlap on September 29, 1941 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was a fourth generation Fergus County resident. He spent his young life learning every bend and ripple of Spring Creek, fishing his limit every day or hunting every inch of Fergus County, he was a master marksman throughout his life.

George attended Highland Park Elementary, Lewistown Junior High, and Fergus County High School. He received his G.E.D. diploma while in the U.S. Navy.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 26, 1959, at the age of 17; retired from his military career in Crane, Indiana in 1978. George excelled in the military, achieving the rank of E7, Chief Gunner’s Mate, and graduated to this rank with honors and distinction in the mid-60’s.

He served aboard several ships as Chief Gunner, ammunitions and destroyers alike. He served aboard the USS England in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War.

He also served aboard the USS Forster doing 14 tours to Vietnam for ammunition and supplies. He was a gunnery instructor at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Illinois.

George was “completely Navy” all his life telling his stories and accomplishments as a modest and proud Veteran.

George excelled in his youth for his American Legion Baseball team as a 3rd baseman, encouraged and supported by his uncle, Dave Kilgore; retired U.S. Navy.

Survivors are his son, Patrick Howard Dunlap, Elmira, CA; stepson, Darren Manning; ex-wife, Sue White, Grants Pass, OR; sisters, Barbara M. (Jim) Connolly, Patricia (Lloyd-deceased) Farley, Debora E. (Will) Taurman; nieces and nephews, Doreen Connolly (Scott) Smith, Billings, MT, Kathleen Connolly (Russ) Kirkpatrick, Red Lodge, MT, Scott H. Farley; son, Austin M., Seattle, WA, Cynthia N. Farley & Mike Pick, Snohomish, WA; paternal aunt, Nan Dee (Dunlap) Waleszonia, Lewistown, MT; special great-niece, Becky Kirkpatrick; and longtime companion, Barbara Stillman; several cousins and numerous friends, especially Dan Metcalf, Evelyn Powell and Eric LaRoque who helped George lovingly and gently for years.

George was preceded in death by his mother, May E. McDonald Dunlap; father, Howard W. Dunlap; nephew, Steven Connolly; step-daughter, Brenda Manning; special and loved friends, Bruce Powell and Dan Stillman; grandparents, George and Margaret (Crockett) McDonald, William and Drucilla Dunlap; aunts and uncles, Edith (Dunlap) and Dave Kilgore, Vera (Tindall) and George McDonald, Geneva and Donald McDonald.

George was a Master Mason at Lodge #37, Lewistown, MT. He belonged to Lewistown Trap Club, was a master marksman extraordinaire, and won many trophies. Upon retirement from the U.S. Navy he began managing the Chevron Bulk Plant and Service Station after his father Howard Dunlap retired. Following that he was employed for 17 years at Koenitz Construction.

George was a loving and generous man. He will be missed, but remembered always for his humor and kindness to his friends and family.

Graveside Services will be held Tuesday, November 14th, 11:00 a.m. at Central Montana Memorial Gardens with Reverend Jean Collins of St. James Episcopal Church officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Fergus American Legion Post #16 and the Navy Honor Guard. Memorials in George’s honor may be made to Veterans Memorial Walk (Lewistown Vietnam Memorial) or to CMMC Home Health Hospice who cared for him lovingly and with compassion his last days.
