Obituary for Oliver W. Grove

On March 15, 2020, the angels came for Oliver W. Grove, 85, and took him home. His long battle with dementia is over and he is whole again.

Oliver was born on December 19, 1934, at home on the family farm near Richland, MT. He spent his early years riding his horses to visit friends in Canada and making music with his parents, Martin and Jenny (Andersen) Grove, and his 6 siblings. As a young man he played stringed instruments in a local band. He attended school in Peerless, MT, often riding his horse to and from school in all forms of weather. He met Donna Hawbaker, the love of his life, when they were in 2nd grade. Both of them graduated in 1952 and were married in Peerless June 7, 1953.

A job with the Noblitt family brought them to Denton. Oliver spent time working with Tum Mustard before moving to Winifred for a job with Asbjornson Implement. Oliver and Donna moved back to Denton in 1962 and by this time Gerald, Monte, ShirLee and Myron had completed the family. Aside from a few years in Wyoming and Huntley, MT, Oliver and Donna enjoyed life in Denton in their old farm house, creating a gathering spot for family and friends. Card parties with neighbors, and many spirited games of horseshoes took place over the years.

Oliver made lifelong friends wherever he went. His years with Denton Public Schools touched so many lives. He enjoyed driving bus because of the kids and the opportunities to visit with friends at school events everywhere. He looked forward to seeing all of his customers at the Denton Farmer’s Co-op Elevator and they looked forward to seeing him and his dog.

After retirement in 1999 he devoted his time to his grandkid’s events, his garden and yard, and becoming an even more skilled woodworker. He lovingly made gifts for family members that are cherished by everyone. Dad was a devoted member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church for over 60 years. He served on the Denton Volunteer Fire Department, acted as Boy Scout leader for his sons, and was a volunteer NOAA weather observer for 15 years. He was an active member of the Lion’s Club and enjoyed time with the Senior Citizens group. Oliver was honored to have the opportunity to teach Hunter’s Safety for 31 fun years.

Oliver enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, camping, and digging for rocks and fossils. Some of his proudest moments were spent teaching his kids and grandkids to hunt and fish. Any time he could lend a hand to a friend made him happy.

Oliver is survived by his wife Donna, of Denton; sons Gerald (Cathy) Grove of Polson, Monte (Sabrina) Grove of Lewistown, Myron (Kelly) Grove of Hayden, ID, daughter ShirLee (Mike) Perrodin of Great Falls; grandchildren, Jerad (Cindy) Grove, Mason Oliver and Emma of Butte, Mitchell (Jenna) Grove of Missoula, Kevin (Kati) Grove of Shepherd, Kristen (Jake) Bramante of Kalispell, Kait (Wes Ballantyne) Perrodin of Helena, John Perrodin of Havre, Olivia Grove and Lauren Grove of Moscow, ID, Emily Grove of Hayden, ID; sister, Arlene Ferestad of Scobey; special friends, Dick (Karen) Miller and Dwight (Brenda) Donaldson; numerous in-laws, nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Dale and Richard; sisters, Edna, Dorine, and Florence.

We would like to thank the staff of the Missouri River Medical Center for their kind, compassionate care, and Laurell and Barb for their gentle home care. Thank you to the friends who brought Donna to visit Oliver in Fort Benton.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Denton Lions Club, PO Box 423, or Denton Hunter’s Safety, c/o Rod Boling, Denton, MT 59430.
