Obituary for Callie W. Ernst

Callie Woodard Jenni Ernst, 84, of Lewistown passed away, September 15, 2019 in Lewistown at the Central Montana Medical Center.

Callie was born August 1, 1935, in Lodge Grass, Montana, the daughter of Hubert and Elizabeth (Keller) Woodard.

She attended school in Billings, graduating from Billings Senior High in 1953. After which she attended MSU in Bozeman for three years, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. It was at college that she met her future husband, A. Joe Jenni, Jr. They were married in Billings on December 18, 1955 and following Joe’s graduation and two years in the Army, they returned to the Jenni farm on Lower Cottonwood Creek, near Lewistown. Joe passed away on October 13, 1996. Callie later married Norman Ernst and they resided southeast of Lewistown on Hanson Creek Road.

Callie loved living in rural Montana and took great pride in the stewardship of the land and in the herd of cattle that she and Joe, and later son Bob, put together. The brands used came from her father and one was of historical value in Montana.

Callie loved music and sang, for many weddings and other occasions in church choirs and at MSU she sang in the concert choir and was a member of a select group called The Madrigal Singers. She always looked forward to singing in the Community Christmas Cantata.  She became a member of the Methodist Church in 1949 and was an active member of the youth group, serving two years as a state officer. The Rainbow for Girls played an important part in her life- as a charter member of Jewel Assembly #56, serving as worthy advisor and in later years she was a member of the advisory board in Lewistown.

Callie joined the Order of the Eastern Star as a 19 year old and served as Worthy Matron in 1972-1973 in Lewistown. She was the clerk of the school board – District #40 for 13 years; a member of Jaycees, where she served as President; Farm Bureau and Home Demonstration Club. She received a two year leadership training fellowship at MSU sponsored by the Kellogg Company and was among the first group of Montana Friendship Forces to visit Japan in 1980.

While Joe was in the Army, Callie became an orthodontist assistant. When the children were in high school she opened a ladies clothing shop called “Callie’s Denim Patch” which she operated for over 14 years. She then went to work at CMMC as a pharmacy tech.

During the years she and Norm had together, they did a great deal of traveling in the US, Canada, France, Switzerland, Germany, England, Austria, New Zealand, Australia and Italy.

Callie is survived by her husband, Norm; a son, Robert (Kelly) Jenni, of Lewistown; a daughter Christine Jenni (Jim Koscielniak), of Denver, CO; a grandson, Casey (Amanda) Jenni; and great-grandson, Mason; and great-granddaughter, Riley, and several nieces and nephews. There were also Norm’s children, Terry (Shirley) Ernst, Lori (Ted) Kronebusch, and Barb (Greg) Jergeson, and grandchildren who blessed her marriage to Norm.

Callie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe and a sister, Jean Noe.
