Obituary for Virginia M. Melichar

Today we honor the life of Virginia (Fox) Melichar, daughter of Mary Francis Link and Sidney Bronson. Virginia was born September 3, 1921, in Coburg, Montana; the second of six children born to Francis. She took as her last name Fox from her mother's second marriage to Harold Fox, a significant influence on her life. As school records document, the family moved frequently within the borders of Montana. Virginia attended first grade in Billings; second and third grades and first part of fourth in Babb; the remainder of fourth, all of fifth, and sixth in Forest grove; seventh and eighth in Hilger; and graduated from high school in 3 years from Roy in 1940.

After high school, Virginia attended and graduated from the Registered Nursing Program at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lewistown in 1943. Through the years, she frequently volunteered her nursing skills for the American Red Cross and cared for hospitalized relatives as a private nurse. Virginia remained friends with many of those she attended nurses training with.

On November 27, 1943, Virginia married Edward Melichar at the Presbyterian Church in Lewistown and they moved to the family farm south of Moore. They had four children: Leslie, Kenneth, Donald, and Beatrice who all reaped the benefits of growing up in rural central Montana.

Virginia took advantage of living on the farm and was often praised for her wonderful flower and vegetable gardens. She was also active in the Moore community such as the Methodist Church (teaching Sunday school), Ladies Aid, Bridge Clubs, and the Federation of Women's Clubs (she served as an officer in most of these). She was elected to the Moore School Board several times. Virginia served on the Fergus County Council on Aging Board and in 2004 was honored as the Senior of the Year in Fergus County. Virginia was instrumental in starting the Senior Citizens program in Moore and volunteered there for many years.

After her husband, Edward, died, Virginia moved into Moore where, on most mornings in the spring, summer, and fall she could be found in her yard working on flower beds, her small garden, or pulling weeds. In the winter, she kept her sidewalks and driveway clear of snow and ice. When Virginia wasn't outside, she was crocheting, embroidering, sewing Care Bears, or reading. If someone wanted to play a game of cards they could count on her to join them. Virginia also loved to travel.

As her children married, Virginia was blessed with seven grandchildren: Les and Marge had Brenda, Maria and Derek; Ken and Barb had Leah; Don and Marshelle had Jennifer; and Bea and Kevin had Carrie and Paul. Today there are also fourteen great grandchildren and two great- great grandchildren.

Until almost her 95th birthday, Virginia lived in her house in Moore with the help and support of her local family (Les, Marge, Derek and Maria). Following a stroke in May of 2016, she moved to St John's in Billings to be closer to her daughter. Virginia passed away Saturday, October 21, 2017.

Graveside services will be held at the Moore Cemetery, Friday, October 27th, 1:30 p.m. A reception will follow at the Office Bar in Moore. Memorial donations are requested to the American Red Cross, Moore Women’s Club, or the Moore Endowment, c/o of the Central Montana Foundation.
