Obituary for Lois Ruth Hajenga

Lois Ruth Hajenga, 92, passed away Monday, October 16, 2017 at Peace Hospice in Great Falls, MT. She was born in Dagmar, MT at home in a log house in the middle of the prairie. Her parents were Folmer and Esther (Jorgensen) Christensen. Lois attended grade school in Dagmar and grew up during the 1930’s, the Great Depression, and World War II. She often shared her memories and stressed these were the toughest of times.

Lois attended Grandview College in Iowa and then Eastern Montana College in Billings to receive her teaching certification. She taught at many country schools, the longest period in Roundup, MT, and finished her career substituting in the Benchland area.

While in Roundup and through Louise, who later became her sister-in-law, she met Walter Hajenga and they were married July 1, 1950. Together they had two children: Barbara and Jeffrey.

Lois was a strong and determined lady with a personality of her own. She loved her husband, their ranch and cattle, and especially her children. Lois was always extremely busy and active in the community. She was an amazing seamstress, member of the Methodist Church, Benchland Women’s Club, Benchland Ceramic Club, Quilting Guild, and Order of the Eastern Star. She could put men to shame when it came to stacking small bales and she could shoot!

Lois is survived by her children Barbara (Mike) Towne and Jeff (Mary) Hajenga; grandchildren, Calvin Gilbert and Deanna, Kevin Gilbert, Wally Hajenga and Kayla, Marie Hajenga and Steve, Reuben, Denay, and Alida; great grandchildren, Braxton, Karley, Pyper, Karrighan, and Teegan; sisters, Sigrid Petersen and Etta Tuss; brother, Kai Christensen; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ruth Christensen; and brothers, Vernon and Jorgen Christensen.

A Celebration of Lois’ Life will be held Saturday, October 21st, 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lewistown. A private committal service will be in the Stanford Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to CMMC Hospice, Hospice of Great Falls or a hospice of your choice or to the Emma and Evan Foundation, 2240 Westfield Court, Missoula, MT 59801.
