Obituary for Donald Gene "Don" Arthur

Donald Gene “Don” Arthur of Billings, MT lost his battle with cancer on November 14, 2017 but he gave it one hell of a fight. He was born on September 3, 1946 in Lewistown, MT to Hedley John and Elizabeth Barbara “Tiny” LaFountain Arthur; the sixth of seven children. Don was raised on the family ranch near Winifred, MT.

On January 14, 1967 Don married Elva Jean (Eike) Arthur to which he was hitched to for the next 50 years. Together they raised four amazing, well-educated children (Shawn, Shane, Shannon, and Shiela) whom he was extremely proud of. It was from his children that he received his greatest pride and joy, his eight grandchildren (Cole, Adam, Ian, Connor, Caleb, Caitlin, Arya, and Kysin).

Don began his education in Winifred School graduating from Winifred High School while serving his country in the Army from 1963 to 1965. He attended the NCO Academy in Colorado Springs, CO before returning home from his time served. He later attended Eastern Montana College with some of his best buddies before he decided on his lifetime career working construction.

His career in heavy highway construction started for him as a young man and continued into his most recent years. He became a heck of a hand running equipment throughout his life and learned to get the best out of his people when running “his” crews. Later in his years he found his niche estimating and was proud of all the bids he wrangled up, winning plenty more than his fair share. Don was a hard worker from a young age and extremely meticulous and demanded these traits from all of those lucky enough to work with him.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Elva Arthur of Billings, MT; his four children and eight grandchildren, Shawn (Nadelle) Arthur (Cole, Adam, and Ian) of Great Falls, MT, Shane (Nichole) Arthur (Connor, Caleb, and Caitlin) of Kirkland, WA, Shannon Arthur of Belgrade, MT, and Shiela (Lee) Cavender (Arya and Kysin) of Bozeman, MT; Siblings, Larry Arthur (Shirley), Patsy (Bob) Simac, Bea (Tony) Lunda, Sid (Penny) Arthur; Mother-in-law, Flossie Eike; Sister-in-laws, Leta (Ed) Grebe and Bette (Stan) Newman; Brother-in-law, John (Kathy) Eike; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Tony and Jim Arthur; and Father-in-law, Robert Eike.

A Celebration of Don’s life will be held Saturday, August 18, 2018 starting at the Lewistown City Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. We will proceed to the Trade Center following the graveside service for a time of Remembrance and Pow Wow.

Due to an accident that occurred in 1982 involving his daughter, Don held a special place in his heart for all that they do at the Ronald McDonald House Charities. So because of this his family is asking anyone who chooses, to send donations to the Ronald McDonald House, 1144 N 30th St, Billings, MT 59101 or charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the care of Creel Funeral Home. Don’s family and friends can share a memory or condolence at www.creelfuneralhome.com
