Rose Popnoe Spraggins

Rose Popnoe Spraggins, a former High School Business Teacher, died of natural causes Monday at Central Montana Medical Center.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14th at Creel Funeral Home in Lewistown. Graveside Services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15th at the Mayn Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs.

Survivors include her son Howard E. (Tom) (Katherine) Spraggins of Lewistown, grandchildren Tyler Tox Spraggins of Lewistown and Kallie Rose Spraggins of Bozeman, a nephew Jim (Kayna) Popnoe of Bulverde, Texas and a niece Sue Tiffin of Missoula.

She was preceded in death by her father Ivan James (Tox) Popnoe and her mother Ella Lohse Popnoe, her husband Evert O. (Chev) Spraggins, a daugher Shirley Marie Spraggins, and brother Dr. Howard (Helen) Popnoe.

Rose was born August 19, 1918 at the Lohse Ranch north of Winifred and was educated in Winifred, where she graduated valedictorian from Winifred High School. She attended the College of Great Falls and the University of Montana, receiving her Business Teaching Degree. She was proud that she was able to work and use scholarships to pay for all her education. In November 1945, Rose married Evert O. (Chev) Spraggins of Denton, Montana and were married for 53 years. Rose began her teaching career at the PN School north of Winifred, staying with her grandparents at the Lohse Ranch. Her second teaching job was at the Flax School West of Winifred. She taught at Denton and French Town, before settling at White Sulphur Springs, where she taught for 38 years. She was very close to her Father Tox and loved spending times at the family ranch northwest of Winifred. After retirement Rose and Chev spent their winters in Arizona and summers at their home north of White Sulphur Springs. After Chev's death, she moved to Lewistown and lived at the Eagles Manor to be close to her son. She was also very proud of her grandchildren, that Tyler attended college and has his own business and that Kallie graduated from college with a Business Marketing Degree. A good education was very important to Rose. She loved teaching bookkeeping, typing, shorthand and being the senior class sponsor. She was very proud of the achievements her students obtained. Rose loved to travel and especially to plan her trips to the Oregon Coast. She loved her poodle, Midgy as her constant companion in her last years of life.

Memorials are suggested to the Fergus County Council on Aging.
